Clear Creek Golf Winner

The first trivia contest of May 2010 ended yesterday. There were 15 correct answers. As a reminder, the question was:
The ball is in play, when the player has:
(A) taken his stance and grounded his club on the teeing ground.
(B) made a stroke with the ball from within the teeing ground.
(C) placed the ball on a tee peg within the teeing ground.
(D) found the ball at rest out of bounds.
The correct answer is “B”, as dictated by the Ball in Play definition in the Rules of Golf:
A ball is “in play” as soon as the player has made a stroke on the teeing ground. It remains in play until it is holed, except when it is lost, out of bounds or lifted, or another ball has been substituted, whether or not the substitution is permitted; a ball so substituted becomes the ball in play.
Thanks to the USGA site as a great resource for Rules questions and answers.
The winner, chosen at random from the correct entrants, is….
Ron Kurtz
Congrats to Ron for winning a free round of golf at Clear Creek Golf Club and thanks to Chris Lacher at Clear Creek for helping to organize this.
The next contest will be starting tomorrow, Tuesday, May 18th, so check back then. Also, you can see all the results from past contests on the Houston Golf Nut Contest page.

TPC in TPC Sawgrass Stands for…
The Houston Golf Nut Trivia Contest – April 2010 Part 3 (that’s a mouthful) concluded yesterday. The question was:
What does “TPC” stand for in “TPC Sawgrass”?
The CORRECT answer is “Tournament Players Club”. The most popular WRONG answers were “Tournament Players Course” and “The Players Championship”.
From the TPC website (http://www.tpc.com/about.html):
Also, from a couple of Wikipedia articles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tournament_Players_Club
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Players_Championship
Since 1982 The Players Championship has been played across the road from Sawgrass Country Club, on the Stadium Course at the “Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass” (usually referred to as the TPC at Sawgrass). It is not uncommon for “TPC” in this context to be conflated with “The Players Championship” because they happen to have the same initials – in fact, this confusion was the reason why the tournament’s original name was shortened to just “Players Championship” prior to the 1988 event, although some confusion between the two still persists occasionally.
Out of the correct entries, the random winners are:
Glenn Emshoff – Free 4some at Blaketree National Golf Club
Tom Dane – Free round at Clear Creek Golf Club
This picture is a representation of Glenn and Tom winning their free golf.

Thanks to everyone for their participation and the next contest for free golf will be starting soon.

Trivia Winner and More Free Houston Golf
April Trivia Contest part 2 ended yesterday. Here’s a recap of the question:
Through the green, the player may lift his ball without penalty in which one of the following?
(a) Another ball in motion, might be stopped or deflected by his ball.
(b) The player thinks his ball will interfere with another player’s play.
(c) The player thinks his ball will assist another player’s play.
(d) The player is never entitled to lift his ball without penalty when it lies through the green.
The correct answer is “C” – Rule 22. Here are a couple of screenshots from the USGA site about Rule 22.

We know it’s not “A” because the rule clearly starts, “Except when a ball is in motion, if a player…”
We know it’s not “B” because the Note of 22-2 states, “Except on the putting green, a player may not lift his ball solely because he considers that it might interfere with the play of another player. If a player lifts his ball without being asked to do so, he incurs a penalty of one stroke for a breach of Rule 18-2a, but there is no additional penalty under Rule 22.” The other player needs to ask you to move it, you can’t think your ball will interfere.
This question came straight from a USGA quiz. Only 6 people got the answer right. By random drawing of correct entrants, the winner of the 2nd Trivia Contest of April 2010 is:
Glen Jaquay
Enjoy that free 4some at Bear Creek.
Oh, and one more thing. The new Houston Golf Nut trivia contest is starting today. There will be 2 winners this time. The 2 prizes up for grabs are a free 4some at Blaketree National and a free round at Clear Creek. You can always get to the active contest by clicking on the banner up top or going through the Contest page.
Good luck!

More Free Golf in April
Okay, Houston Golf Nut has a few announcements today. First, let’s talk about the April Trivia Contest. I think practically everyone got the answer right: Nick Faldo in 1996. That’s the year when the Shark totally collapsed and Sir Nick Faldo was there to pick up the pieces.

There were over 25 correct entries to this contest and the winner, chosen at random, is Scott Simmons. Congrats to Scott who won a free 4some at Longwood Golf Club.
Now to some even better news. Houston Golf Nut is starting April Trivia Contest Part 2 today! This contest will run through Sunday, April 25th. Go to the Trivia page to find out the question, read the rules, and enter the contest. Good luck to everyone! (Oh, the winner of this contest gets a free 4some to Bear Creek Golf World, an awesome prize indeed.)
