Perception of Woods

Check out this Tiger Woods article from Doug Ferguson, AP Golf Writer, at Yahoo Sports:

He last won a major in the 2008 U.S. Open, when he had only one good leg and needed one extra day to beat Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines. The 0-for-7 streak he is riding still doesn’t match a pair of 0-for-10s in the majors from the 1997 Masters to the 1999 PGA Championship, and from the 2002 U.S. Open to the 2005 Masters.

It’s not time to panic just yet.

I Know a Good Therapist

Matt Slocum/Associated Press

Can I have a do-over?

Remember that scene in Dumb & Dumber where Jim Carrey is about to be assaulted by Sea Bass in the gas station bathroom?  Resigning to the fact that he’s about to be molested, Jim Carrey huddles in the corner of the stall, sucks his thumb, and whispers like a broken record to himself, “Find a happy place… find a happy place… find a happy place…”

Is that what Dustin Johnson went through yesterday?  We’ve seen some major meltdowns before, but the only way it could have gotten worse is if he actually shit his pants and had to walk around with the stain in his shorts all day.

Maybe that’s the one (and only) thing that NASCAR has in common with golf.  In NASCAR, fans are enamored with the possibility of a car wreck.  In golf, like we witnessed yesterday with Dustin Johnson, it’s the same thing.  You can’t help but peek between your fingers at a train wreck.

PREDICTION:  Don’t forget you heard it here first.  Tiger Woods will win the 2010 British Open at St. Andrews.  We saw a glimpse of the real Tiger on Saturday with a stunning 31 on the back nine.  He’s close.  Even as “poor” as he’s playing (relative only to his own legacy), he still came in 4th and tied with FIGJAM.  His “poor” would be a career tourney for most players.

The correct answer for the June Trivia Contest Part 2 is (B) Jack Nicklaus.  Easy as pie.  Over 30 people got it right.  Out of the correct entrants, the 2 winners chosen at random are:

Adrian Garcia – One Free Round of Golf at Fort Bend Country Club

Andy Walsh – One Round of Golf with Cart for Four Players at Houston National Golf Club

The next trivia contest opens up tomorrow, so check back then for the new contest.

The Shark Attacks

Okay, this last trivia question was a softball.  Almost everybody got it right, but there were a few sad sacks out there who didn’t.  For a refresher, here’s the question again.

Who holds the most weeks at the number 1 world golf ranking after Tiger Woods?

(A) Jack Nicklaus
(B) Greg Norman
(C) Nick Faldo
(D) Phil Mickelson

As stated in the intro of the trivia page, the World Golf Rankings didn’t start until 1986.  That pretty much eliminates Jack.  Everyone should know that Phil has never been #1, although it’s in his sights this weekend.  That leaves Greg and Nick.  I found this perfect chart on Wikipedia:

Now we know that Greg Norman is the correct answer (and by a long shot).  And I think we can also see how Tiger Woods has treated the rest of the PGA like a red-headed stepchild with a glass eye and a wooden leg.

Out of all of the correct entrants, 2 winners were chosen at random.  And the Houston Golf Nut Trivia Contest – May 2010 Part 3 winners are:

Dale Morrison – Free Round of Golf for 4 (including green free, carts, and range balls) at Blaketree National Golf Club (Tuesday – Friday)

Stephen Schulz – One Round of Golf with Cart for 4 Players at Houston National Golf Club (Mon – Thurs)

The next Trivia Contest will start on June 1st, so come back soon.

Hank Haney 86′s Tiger Woods

Wow, if things couldn’t get any worse for Tiger Woods, Hank Haney resigns as his swing coach.  I first read the news from Shane Bacon at Devil Ball Golf:

Haney issued a statement on Monday night about his decision to move away from Team Tiger. The gist of it is below:  “I have informed Tiger Woods this evening that I will no longer be his coach.”

Read the rest here about Hank Haney leaving Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods on South Park

So, South Park featured Tiger Woods on their season premiere tonight and poked fun at the notion of a male sex addict among rich celebrities.  Maybe you’re not a fan of South Park, but tonight’s episode was hilarious!  Here’s a short clip from this episode.

Here’s a short clip from some dude on Fox Sports.  He’s got some ideas for new sponsors for Tiger.  (Thanks for the find Moe!)

Good Takes on Tiger Woods

It’s been almost a week since Tiger Woods’ apology.  Personally, I think people need to cut this guy some slack.  I mean, I don’t condone cheating on your wife, but he didn’t friggin kill anybody, get accused of rape, throw someone through a plate-glass window, get busted selling a trunk-load of cocaine and marijuana, not pay child support, stab his wife in the driveway, bite a woman’s ass, or the hundreds of other things that other pro athletes (and Marv Albert) have been accused and/or convicted of.

No one is perfect, but that doesn’t affect what this guy can do on a golf course.  He’s still the best of the best, no matter how you slice it.  In a few years, he’ll be hawking products again like nothing happened.

Here’s a few good Tiger Woods takes that I’ve read the last couple of days:

houston-golf-nut-tiger-woods-suspensionTiger Woods apparently wasn’t suspended, but why not?
Devil Ball Golf
Jay Busbee

…Still, while Woods’ relationship issues are a family matter, his impact on the game most certainly is not. So what actions might the PGA Tour take against Woods for actions detrimental to the game? PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem has reiterated several times that Woods has not been suspended for his actions. To which many reply, “why the heck not?” Read more…

“Mistress Collection” Golf Balls Backlash

Apparently, one of the women on the infamous Tiger Woods “Mistress Collection” golf ball set has retained attorney Gloria Allred and spoken out against the balls, arguing that they promote violence towards women.  Allred postulates, “What’s next, using women’s faces on dart boards?”

(Thanks for this catch Billy)
