Best Masters Ever

"I've got a turtle head poking out."

Wow!  What was everybody else doing on Sunday afternoon?  Most golf fans must have been glued to their TV sets, watching the most competitive final round in the Masters that I can remember.  8 to 10 guys were in contention and at one point, even my boy Tiger Woods was sitting on top of the leaderboard.

Couple of quick hits:

"Maybe I should've pulled a Jay Cutler."

  • Rory McIlroy turned into a droopy-eyed armless child (kudos to Charlie Sheen for that one!).  That kid is a great golfer but unfortunately for him, he dropped like a par of 60-year-old saggy titties coming out of a wonder bra.
  • Adam Scott and Jason Day fought hard!  Both guys finished strong and did the best they could.  Scott’s par save on 17 was amazing under the pressure, especially that 20-foot or so putt.  Would Rory have played better if he had played with Jason Day again?
  • Charl Schwartzel won with his putter.  Guys that win golf tournaments do it with their putters and Charl’s last 4 putts made the difference.  Unbelievable exhibition!  And how solid was that drive on 18?
  • Tiger is back!  He drove the ball consistently and his iron play was dead-on, except for 13.  He just couldn’t make putts on the back!  I was going crazy when he missed his eagle putt at 15!  Let’s be honest.  He had a chance on Sunday after a phenomenal front nice, but he lost it with a 74 on Saturday.  Just sniffing the leaderboard on Sunday had to feel great after being down 7 going into the final round.

Throw McIlroy in with Dustin Johnson and Nick Watney (both giving up leads in 2010 majors) as young guns who didn’t bring it when they needed to.  Goes to show how mentally tough it is to focus on the task at hand.

Shout out to the KGT golf league that I played in this past weekend at World Houston Golf.  Awesome day to play and had a blast.  There next event is in a few weeks.  I’ll post more information next week.

Congrats Bubba

"Who says I have long arms?"

Did anyone watch the first network-broadcasted PGA Tour golf event of the year – the Farmers Insurance Open*?

I watched a little bit on Saturday and the last hour or so on Sunday.  Bubba Watson made some huge putts, especially the one on 17 from about 12 feet out.  How can you not like what this guy is all about?  Just after his win, an emotional Watson reminded us how tough it is to win on tour, knowing that another lefty is right on your heels.

Not sure about you, but I was shocked that Phil didn’t go for it on 18.  Reading a little about his decision, it appears he didn’t have the right lie for a hybrid or a 3-wood.

Back to Watson.  Not only did he knock down 2 huge putts on 17 and 18, he showed tremendous poise on that hole 17 flop shot out of the thick greenside rough and the sand out from 18.  Those are tough shots without any pressure, let alone when an 800 lb gorilla (not literally Phil) is on your heels.

Tiger showed up for a couple days, but unfortunately lost it on Saturday.  I still expect him to come back strong this year (5 wins and 1 major).

Looking forward to next week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Here are a couple of stories about Bubba Watson’s win:

Yahoo Sports (Doug Ferguson)

The Golf Channel (Rex Hoggard)

* is it just me or can anyone else not get that Farmers jingle (we are farmers…) out of their head?

Vijay and Tiger

"I hate it that you won't hold my hand in public."

The latest Houston Golf Nut Trivia Contest, circa September 2010, ended yesterday.  The question was:

The FedEx Cup  is a championship trophy for the PGA Tour.  It was first awarded in 2007.  Who are the only 2 golfers who have been awarded this championship?

A) Tiger Woods & Ernie Els
B) Phil Mickelson & Tiger Woods
C) Tiger Woods & Vijay Singh
D) Tiger Woods & Johnny Miller

For a golfer with half a heartbeat, this would be like playing softball with a beach ball.  Of course, the answer is (C).  Check out the Wikipedia page on more FedEx Cup info.

The winners are:

Steve Kalmus – Bear Creek Golf World (for 2)

Blake Reetz – Fort Bend Country Club (for 1)

The new trivia contest is already open, so jump in and good luck.

Tiger Woods – PGA Championship Favorite?

There’s no point piling on Tiger Woods at this point.  Pretty much every writer is spewing the same thing: Tiger might actually be done.

Case in point.  Check out the Jason Sobel Weekly 18 on ESPN.com:

I’ve been saying for years that it’s only a matter of time before Tiger Woods breaks Jack Nicklaus’ vaunted record of 18 career major championship titles.

I’ve been saying since Woods’ personal scandal broke that as a player with greater mental fortitude than his competition, he would successfully be able to separate his private issues from his professional exploits.

And now I’m saying this: I was wrong.

Is there anyone interested in golf betting who would wager on Tiger Woods this weekend?  Probably not.  There’s no question that this past weekend is the low point in Tiger’s entire golfing career and that he was wishing there had been a cut.

Now seemingly more realistic is the fact that Tiger Woods will have his first calendar year without a golf tournament win.  Take a look at his previous yearly lows.  In 1998, he only had 1 win, and followed it up with the best stretch of golf ever (8 wins in 1999, 9 wins in 2000).  In 2004, he only had 1 win and followed it up with 6 wins in 2005 and 8 wins in 2006.

Maybe betting on Tiger this weekend isn’t the smart play, but not betting on him next year might be the dumbest thing ever.

Perception of Woods

Check out this Tiger Woods article from Doug Ferguson, AP Golf Writer, at Yahoo Sports:

He last won a major in the 2008 U.S. Open, when he had only one good leg and needed one extra day to beat Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines. The 0-for-7 streak he is riding still doesn’t match a pair of 0-for-10s in the majors from the 1997 Masters to the 1999 PGA Championship, and from the 2002 U.S. Open to the 2005 Masters.

It’s not time to panic just yet.

I Know a Good Therapist

Matt Slocum/Associated Press

Can I have a do-over?

Remember that scene in Dumb & Dumber where Jim Carrey is about to be assaulted by Sea Bass in the gas station bathroom?  Resigning to the fact that he’s about to be molested, Jim Carrey huddles in the corner of the stall, sucks his thumb, and whispers like a broken record to himself, “Find a happy place… find a happy place… find a happy place…”

Is that what Dustin Johnson went through yesterday?  We’ve seen some major meltdowns before, but the only way it could have gotten worse is if he actually shit his pants and had to walk around with the stain in his shorts all day.

Maybe that’s the one (and only) thing that NASCAR has in common with golf.  In NASCAR, fans are enamored with the possibility of a car wreck.  In golf, like we witnessed yesterday with Dustin Johnson, it’s the same thing.  You can’t help but peek between your fingers at a train wreck.

PREDICTION:  Don’t forget you heard it here first.  Tiger Woods will win the 2010 British Open at St. Andrews.  We saw a glimpse of the real Tiger on Saturday with a stunning 31 on the back nine.  He’s close.  Even as “poor” as he’s playing (relative only to his own legacy), he still came in 4th and tied with FIGJAM.  His “poor” would be a career tourney for most players.

The correct answer for the June Trivia Contest Part 2 is (B) Jack Nicklaus.  Easy as pie.  Over 30 people got it right.  Out of the correct entrants, the 2 winners chosen at random are:

Adrian Garcia – One Free Round of Golf at Fort Bend Country Club

Andy Walsh – One Round of Golf with Cart for Four Players at Houston National Golf Club

The next trivia contest opens up tomorrow, so check back then for the new contest.
