February 2011 Golf Trivia Winner
Happy Monday! Good morning to all 2 or 3 of you who are reading the Houston Golf Nut blog right now.
The February 2011 Trivia Contest is officially over. The question was:
A player has interference from an immovable obstruction (cart path) when:
(A) his ball lies on the cart path.
(B) his stance is on the cart path.
(C) his club hits the curbing of the cart path when he simulates a swing for the stroke.
(D) any or all of the above occur.
Most people got this right. Over 30 entrants correctly chose “D” as the answer. Rules insert please…
Rule 24-2. Immovable Obstruction
a. InterferenceInterference by an immovable obstruction occurs when a ball lies in or on the obstruction, or when the obstruction interferes with the player’s stance or the area of his intended swing. If the player’s ball lies on the putting green, interference also occurs if an immovable obstruction on the putting green intervenes on his line of putt. Otherwise, intervention on the line of play is not, of itself, interference under this Rule.
Out of the correct entrants, one was chosen at random to win the Free Golf* for a Twosome at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club.
And the winner is…
Brandon Bain
Congrats Brandon. Enjoy the free golf. Til next time, grip it and rip it!

18 Holes For Cancer
This year Team Lavaman is hosting “18 Holes Fore Cancer” on January 31, 2011 at Hermann Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas. This tournament will wholly benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in their efforts to find a cure for cancer and support patients and families as they go through treatment. An estimated 912,938 people in America are living with, or are in remission from, a blood borne cancer. Every four minutes, someone new is diagnosed, every ten minutes someone dies. LLS invested over $69 million in research during 2009 alone! Our goal is to bridge the gap in expenses for patients and their families, and find the cure!

2011 Golf Resolutions
Happy New Year to everybody out in the golfing universe!
I’m excited for what 2011 will bring when it comes to my golf game. Last year was a tough year for me on the links. I was working like a madman (sometimes) to fix my over the top swing. Had some success, but also a lot of steps backwards. I shot my best scores in January and February and pretty much fell apart at the seams the rest of the year.
But, I’m not giving up. My wife bought me a golf practice net for the backyard and I’ve been pounding balls the last week or so, concentrating on the proper swing path.
Yesterday, I golfed for the first time in about a month and shot my best score in almost a year. Bogey or better on 15 of 18 holes, including 2 birdies! Let’s see if it continues.
One of my golfing buddies noticed that the greens had a lot of un-repaired ball marks (I won’t say where), which raised the subject of golf resolutions for the year. Fixing ball marks, filling your fairway divots, not playing slow, etc.
Do you have any good ones? Share them in the comments or on the Houston Golf Nut Facebook page.

The Big 2 Trivia Winners
Winners of the December 2010 Golf Trivia contest have been determined. For a refresher, here was the question:
Who is considered “The Big Three” in golf, widely credited with popularizing the sport around the world.
(A) Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino
(B) Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player
(C) Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player
(D) Arnold Palmer, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus
Of course, the answer is (C).
Tons of articles confirm this. Here’s one from the NY Times:
The Big Three — that’s how they were known when Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player were dominating the PGA Tour and the major championships.
There were over 40 correct entrants. Two were chosen at random for the 2 free golf* for 2 at Houston National Golf Club certificates (sounds a little confusing doesn’t it).
Drumroll please…..
Mick Stum
Stephen Schulz
Congrats guys. I’d also like to point out that Stephen is the first multi-prize winner on the site. (He also won free golf during the summer.)
Thanks to everyone who participated!

The public will still be able to play the updated North and West 18. Make your tee time to play Houston National today! We are open and better than ever!

Ryder Cup Answers

Alarm clock company shares soar after Furyk win.
Congrats to Jim Furyk who pulled off an $11 million sand save. Just behind that, Houston Golf Nut is pleased to announce the winner of the September Trivia Contest Part 2.
Question: Which U.S. golfer has played the most Ryder Cup matches?
(A) Lee Trevino
(B) Lanny Wadkins
(C) Raymond Floyd
(D) Arnold Palmer
(E) Billy Casper
If you’ll remember, I included a link to the official Ryder Cup website along with the question. (Who said I’m not a pushover?) A handful of people misinterpreted the question as “Who played the most Ryder Cups?”. The answers to both questions are on the same Ryder Cup All Time Records page.

Billy Casper has the most matches in the Ryder Cup with 37.
The winners, chosen at random from the correct entrants, are:
Shane P. Walker – Blaketree National Golf Club (for 4)
Glenn Flood – Clear Creek Golf Club (for 1)
Chris Sanders – Houston National Golf Club (for 2)
