City looking to keep its golf courses out of the hole

Read this good article in the Chron today about municipal golf courses in Houston.
By Chris Moran
Every time someone tees up at Brock Park Golf Course, it costs city taxpayers about $20.
Over the five years ending in mid-2010, those losses added up to $2.3 million, according to a recent city auditor’s report.
Brock Park’s greens long have been in the red. The latest documentation of its losses surfaced as the City Council prepared to cut $100 million in spending, in part by laying off 747 employees.

SHO Golf Ticket Winner
On a side note, for anyone who’s going to SHO this weekend, if you snap any good pictures or have any good stories, send them to houstongolfnut [at] gmail.com and I’ll post the good ones.
To refresh your memory, the March Trivia Contest question was:
Which golf course facility has NEVER hosted a Houston Golf Association-promoted PGA TOUR event?
(A) Memorial Park Golf Course
(B) River Oaks Country Club
(C) Sharpstown Country Club
(D) Brock Park Golf Course
The correct answer is (D) Brock Park. From the Shell Houston Open site:
Facilities that have hosted Houston Golf Association-promoted PGA TOUR events include River Oaks Country Club (1946), Pine Forest Country Club (1949), Brae-Burn Country Club (1950), Memorial Park Golf Course(1947, 1951-1963), Sharpstown Country Club (1964, 1965), Champions Golf Club (1966-71 with the U.S. Open in 1969), Westwood Country Club (1972), Quail Valley (1973-74), The Woodlands Country Club (1975-84), Tournament Players Course at The Woodlands (1985-2002), Redstone Golf Club Member Course (2003-2005) and Redstone Golf Club — Tournament Course (2006 to present).
Everybody except one person answered Brock Park. One person put “All”, however, since he didn’t include his email address he doesn’t qualify. I realized after the fact that maybe Brock Park might have hosted an event, but since it wouldn’t have mattered, it becomes a moot point.
The winner of 2 Champion Pavilion Shell Houston Open tickets for Sunday is
Bryan Kinsler
Congrats Bryan and enjoy the show.

Shell Houston Open 2011 Golf Trivia Contest
What’s up Houston golfers? In case you haven’t heard, there’s a professional golf tournament in town this weekend (along with something else called the Final Four).
The Shell Houston Open begins on Thursday and the winner will be crowned on Sunday. Who’s going to win? Phil Mickelson? Lee Westwood? Ernie Els? The only think I know for sure is that the winner won’t accidentally skull a PW 30 yards past the green like me.
I was lucky enough to score 2 tickets for Sunday’s round so go to the golf Trivia Contest page to enter. Better do it fast because this contest is only open until tomorrow.
Good luck!

Houston Golf League – Klamerican Golf Tour
I was fortunate enough last week to have lunch with Jeffrey Klam. Jeffrey runs a Houston-area golf league and they are looking to grow their membership. Here’s a short interview about Klamerican Golf Tour.
Houston Golf Nut: Why did you start the Klamerican Golf Tour?
Jeffrey Klam: I had about 6 guys I played golf with regularly and we were all around the same skill level. I love competition, so it gave me the idea of a mini tournament. It started with my friends, family and coworkers and they brought their friends, family and coworkers. It’s just grown since then.
HGN: How many events do you usually have each year?
JK: We will try to have 6-8 tournaments a year. This includes medal play and team events.
HGN: What type of golfers play in your events?
JK: All kinds of golfers come play KGT. We have single digit handicappers and people who couldn’t break 100 to save their life. The field is usually split between those competing and those just out to have a good time. If you enjoy golf and have a good attitude, KGT is right for you.
HGN: Do you guys do prizes for each event? Year-end?
JK: We raise money throughout the regular season and have prizes at our year end tournament. The “picking order” is based on participation and not how well you played. We do give out engraved crystal for each tournament winner and a crystal trophy for the season champion.
HGN: When’s your next event?
JK: We have our first ever team event on March 12 at Bear Creek Masters course, with food and live music afterwards. Our regular season kicks off April 9 and continues until the middle of July.
If you’re interested in checking them out, drop Jeffrey a note at jeffrey@klamgolf.org.

The Klamerican Golf Tour is a Houston area league for players of all skill levels. Whether you are competing for a win or just trying to shoot your personal best, we are a community of golfers that enjoy the game.
