More Free Golf in April

Okay, Houston Golf Nut has a few announcements today.  First, let’s talk about the April Trivia Contest.  I think practically everyone got the answer right: Nick Faldo in 1996.  That’s the year when the Shark totally collapsed and Sir Nick Faldo was there to pick up the pieces.

There were over 25 correct entries to this contest and the winner, chosen at random, is Scott Simmons.  Congrats to Scott who won a free 4some at Longwood Golf Club.

Now to some even better news.  Houston Golf Nut is starting April Trivia Contest Part 2 today!  This contest will run through Sunday, April 25th.  Go to the Trivia page to find out the question, read the rules, and enter the contest.  Good luck to everyone!  (Oh, the winner of this contest gets a free 4some to Bear Creek Golf World, an awesome prize indeed.)

Hard to Win with Double 9′s

bear-creek-houston-golf-1Yesterday, I played in the 1st Little John Golf League event of 2010.  (Actually, their first event of 2010 starts in 2009, but that’s a different story.)

The setting was Bear Creek – Masters Course. If anyone looks all the way back to the beginning of this blog (a soft launch last March I think), I played an LJGL event there which almost caused me to quit playing golf altogether.

My 1st shot of the tee was into a hazard!  Luckily, it was a par-5 and I was able to save a bogey, so that felt good.  The next 2 holes, I sculled 6-irons from the fairway and couldn’t save bogey either time.  Then I bogeyed 3 out of the next 4 holes and thought I was starting to put something together, until another 6-iron (which has been my go-to club the last month) screwed me on the damn par-3 and I dunked one into the water!

(One of the dudes in our group, Travis, trying his best Vijay Singh par-3 Masters impersonation, dunked 3 tee shots and suffered through a 12 on that hole.  One of the best meltdowns I’ve ever seen, but this kid was a monster with a driver in his hands.)

On the back-nine, I proclaimed to make the Bear Creek Masters course my bitch, barely missing a par putt on 10.  That’s when the golf gods puked on me and I carded a 9 on hole 11… and then again on hole 13.  Hole 11, I made a bad decision (I’m not talking about the decision to even show up) by trying to clear a tree with a 9-iron when I should have punched it under.  (I was in good company because my cart-partner, Randy, was nailing more trees than Woody Woodpecker.)  Hole 13, I pushed my tee shot OB.  Both holes, the bad snowballed into worse and I didn’t come close to recovering.

On the back-nine, I had 1 par, 6 bogeys, and 2 9′s.  Take those nines off and I’d have been in good shape.

So this morning I look and even as poorly as I played, I ended up in 3rd place.  I lost the tie-breaker, though, because it’s based on the net score on the highest handicapped hole which, coincidentally, turned out to be one of my 9′s.

I didn’t deserve to win, so I’m glad I didn’t sneak into any money with that round, but I’m closing in.  I think the next tourney I’ll play with them is in 4 weeks at The Golf Club at Cinco Ranch, where I’ve scored a 94 and 95 the last 2 times I’ve played there.  We’ll see if I can keep those scorecard killers off of my card next time.

Bear Creek Tourney

The Houston Golf Nut is just recovering from Saturday (oh, it’s Tuesday morning btw).  As all of you don’t know, yours truly is tying the knot next month in Tulum, Mexico.  [Insert swine flu joke here.] This past weekend, the bestest man, Moe-man, hooked up a top-notch golf scramble on the Bear Creek President’s Golf Course as part of the celebratory events for the Bachelor Party.  After a few beers, some silliness ensued….

bear-creek-presidents-brian-manuel_small

The golf course is pretty easy so it’s perfect for this type of event where you might have a number of shitty out-of-practice players.  The team of Jim, Billy, Brian, and the Houston Golf Nut won with a +2.  Moe, Manuel, and Tom (who’s a Buckeye fan and his team lost during the round to lowly Purdue — BONUS!) shot a +9 and Bobby, Benny, and Tim didn’t have enough fingers and toes to keep track of their final score, although Bobby claimed to have shot an eagle, although I know for a fact that there aren’t any par-9′s on this course.

When the round was over, the staff hooked us up with a free meal of beef brisket, sausage, and potato salad — YUMMY.  All in all, a great time mixed in with some good golf shots (and many bad ones).

Oh, and just to dispel any rumors up front, a donkey, a bucket of ice, and a midget were never officially part of the nighttime activities. ;-)

Getting Ready for League Event part deux

I’m officially joining the Little John Golf League tomorrow.  I played in my first event as a guest at Blaketree about 2 weeks ago.  Our event tomorrow is at Bear Creek Masters.  I played there once before about 2 years ago and shot horribly.

I remember the day before that painful experience I thought I had figured out “the secret” to golf.  I crushed balls on the range that day… no matter what weapon I chose, it was long and straight.   “Eureka!” I thought, “I better book a tee time ASAP so I can utilize my newly discovered talent and wisdom….”  The next day when I went out to conquer the world, I shortly realized any gained insights on the driving range vanished while I slept and I went on to shoot my worst score of the year!

Hope the sequel is better than the original!
