Few other golf courses in Houston are more historic than Glenbrook, but most golfers are unaware of its legacy and the course no longer resembles the original layout along Sims Bayou. Glenbrook is the second oldest course in Houston, pre-dated only by Houston Country Club. The course was first built in 1924 as a 9 hole course with sand greens called Rio Rita Country Club. Al Espinosa won the Houston Open in 1929. The course was later acquired by the city and opened to the public.

Architect Robert McKinney redesigned the layout in 1983 when the flood district cut the bayou through the course incorporating the bayou into seven of the new holes. The result is a layout that is 300 yards longer, 6-8 shots harder and requires a longer carry over the bayou off the first tee. Shot placement is critical.     “We routed the course so you won’t just be slugging your driver,” McKinney said.   “You’re going to have to play every shot.”

Glenbrook is approximately 9 minutes from downtown and is currently managed by the Lopez Management Group, Inc.
