Little John Golf League

littlejohngolfleague

The Little John Golf League of Houston is having their League Championship the weekend of 10/10-11 at The Golf Course at Cinco Ranch and Cypresswood Golf Course.  Rick Kimbrell, the President of the league, had some time to talk about the upcoming championship and the golf league in general.

Houston Golf Nut: Give me a little history about the league and why it was started.
Rick Kimbrell: Quite a number of years ago, the league was started by the IOF fraternal organization.  The league went through a number of iterations while sponsored by the IOF but all association with the IOF ceased long before my involvement with Little John Golf League.  However, why it was started pretty much remains the same today…to provide a venue to play competitive golf, in a friendly atmosphere, with other guys and gals who are interested in promoting the game of golf.  It does not matter what your background is, what type of job you have, whether you’re rich or poor…all you need is a love of the game and desire to compete.

Football or Golf

Summer has officially ended.  Here in Texas, daylight escapes us around 7pm.  The football season is bustling and the Houston Golf Nut’s beloved Wolverines are 4-0 (much better than last year, right?).

I realized the dilemma last night.  This Saturday, I have a big football game to watch at 11am (Michigan vs Michigan State).  I also need to carry the sticks around the links for about 4 hours.  Before the game is out of the question (daylight doesn’t even break until 7am).  The football game most likely will last until at least 2:30pm, if not 3pm.  Drive to the course… stretch and warm-up… slap a couple putts… doesn’t seem likely to comfortably tee off until 4pm.

I have tentative plans to golf with some work buddies on Saturday afternoon, most likely teeing off around 2:30pm.  Say it’s 1:30pm, the football game is tied midway through the 3rd quarter!  What’s a man to do? [Oh, I can't DVR the game because it's not on national TV.]

There are a ton of football fans/golf fanatics in Houston.  There’s a lot of football going on down here: UT, UH, A&M, Tech, Texans, Cowboys, etc…  Now that the weather actually permits afternoon golf, how do you deal with the football golf dilemma?

New Pull Cart?

About 1 1/2 years ago, I bought a $50 pull cart to make it easier to walk when I play.  The 2 biggest reasons are 1) I can get some exercise while I play (average round is a 5 to 6 mile walk); 2) I can rationalize playing more golf because I’m getting exercise.

I’m thinking of upgrading to a 3-wheel, but then I saw this video.  Could you imagine riding around in Hermann Park on this sucker? (What would be even cooler is if the music in the video auto-plays while you’re riding it.)

Cure Your Slice Video

Most of my golf playing days, I’ve fought a wicked slice. This year, I’ve started to move away from it by flattening my swing, among other things. A friend shared this pretty good video with me that gave me some good pointers. Enjoy…..
